Experiment with design in mind

Artist statement

My motto is to experiment with design in mind. Everyday tasks through the eyes of a designer often lead me to think about things more creatively and productively. Implementing design principles to the way I create art has made me more disciplined. For me, Innovation is creating something out of restrictions and limitations that change the way that others perceive common knowledge. The theme that I want others to see in my art; the adaptiveness of the human condition and how it could be innovated through the restrictions of experiences, genetic predispositions, and culture. I will always stand for what I know is right and will show others my view.  Art is an experiment in discourse.

Biography

Eric Fernandez is a multi-talented artist, graphic designer, and writer who specializes in creating imagery according to a client’s vision. To express his individuality and determination, he always tries to create his unique way of doing things. He found his passion for the arts in high school, where Eric wrote poetry that was published in multiple publications such as Susquehanna Life Magazine. This opportunity kickstarted his pursuit of the arts by affirming that he could make something renowned through his hard work and dedication to a craft. He often writes about what he experienced using strong imagery and metaphors that relate to the human condition. The poems he wrote were accompanied by illustrations that caught the eye of several faculty members who wanted to purchase the drawings along with the poem. Growing up, Eric spent most of his time trying to get people to understand him. Communication was sometimes difficult for him due to his disability, but when people found meaning in his writing and artwork, he felt more connected to them.

After graduation, he attended Towson University, where he decided to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design to concentrate on establishing a good foundation by pursuing different avenues of the artistic world. In college, he tried many things that he enjoyed doing: ceramics, printmaking, etching, and painting. In addition to the arts, he is also passionate about technology and the environment. During his senior year, he was awarded a $1000 grant in the Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry where he pitched his ideas on recycling to a panel of judges. His findings show that using User Experience (UX) design principles to create a mobile application that makes recycling more intuitive will help global participation.

After college, he continued to refine his work by volunteering for nonprofits and participating in different internship programs. He also participated in several internships including the nonprofit organization, Operation ARTS Foundation, Webworks, and Exponential Media where he learned to refine his design and marketing skills. He hopes to continue creating content that is engaging and enlightening for viewers. He aims to create new narratives that capture and convey the essence of the moment that offers people a new perspective through his work.
